Recent Developments

There has been a President sighting in the Pittsburg area- more details as they become available

Thanks to the Mantey’s for their hospitality.  The food was great.  Dave P is still trying to get his mind around

Carrots in cake.

Summer Concert Wrap-up

Dave G thanked the committee for all their hard work, as do we all.   Our cost was $1100.00 which is an increase

of $55.00 from last year.  We had 2 concerts moved to indoor location and 860 attendees.  Everyone who attended

Enjoyed the music and were appreciative of the concerts in the park.

Harriet’s Queries

1. Why did it seem like no weight was given in the judging 4th of July floats in relation to the parade theme.  After

discussion it was decided that the Judges shall be given more guidance as to weighing what we as a club feels is important.

This will be turned over to the parade committee, once Bart picks one for fine tuning.  Bill M suggested parade theme

for next year could be to honor the Boy (and Girl) Scouts of America since it will be their 100th year anniversary.

(our local troop will be camping during our Parade and will not be able to attend).  Picking a theme early will give

Participants more opportunity to think about what they want to do with their floats.

2. (after discussion Harriet was awarded a second question- please note- the honeymoon period is now almost over)

Why did we build such an inept playground-  yes – this is paraphrased as is this whole newsletter-

Kiwanis had nothing to do with which playground equipment was purchased.  We were labor only

Discussion on next phase’s park board is planning, and their request for input was published in last weeks Chesterland News.  All who loved the old playground will soon be able to utilize it at Kiwanis Park.  Discussion of putting our

Plaque back up at Parkside (may want to wait till more equipment is installed. And a plaque at Kiwanis Park honoring

Mel Ramage

Entertainment Books are in!

Each book costs $30.00; early birds get an extra discount card.  If 40 are sold, Jack is able to donate $15.00 for each book sold to the admin fund.  We are not selling to the public as a fund raiser.  Jack and Al are selling to us and what happens to the books after that it is out of their hands.  Checks are made out to Jack, (not wgkiwanis) thus we are still within our bylaws.  These books pay for themselves very fast with cost saving you will realize.

Fall Meetings

The meal committee has met for the past two months to review the survey results and act upon recommendations.  At this time the committee is recommending we keep with our current set up at the Baptist Church and our current provider.  Once a month we will have “Stadium Fair” arranged by a volunteer Kiwanian.  We will strive to have a way for you to be informed prior to the meeting of the menu- i.e. via e-mail or call chain for those who desire a phone call.

Firewood – Anyone in need of free firewood, please help yourself.  The wood is available at the sight of the new football fields, at the corner of Cedar Rd. and S.R. 306.  See Frank Slapnicker with additional questions.  There has been a work stoppage d/t a neighbor playing the wetland card-  No further update at this time.

Meeting on 09/30/08

Speaker – Kevin Chartrand, MD, County Coroner

Very interesting talk; did you know that the Coroner is the only county level person with the authority to arrest the Sheriff?

Qualifications, Duties and Authority

Qualifications:  Must be a licensed physician in the state of Ohio for at least two years preceding his/her election or appointment.

Duties/Authority:  Investigates the CAUSE, MODE, and MANNER of death when a person dies as a result of criminal or other violent means, by casualty, by suicide, or in any suspicious manner, or when a person, including a child under two years of age, dies suddenly when in apparent good health.  May perform (or cause to be performed) autopsies, toxicology tests, and radiology exams as part of the investigation.  May testify in court as an expert witness of cause(s) of death.

Deaths are classified as:  Homicide, Suicide, Accidental, Natural, and Undetermined.  Autopsies are normally sent to Cuyahoga County because they have the right equipment and expertise.  About 27% of the deaths are referred to the Coroner.

Dinners

The cost of our dinners are now $11.00.  We guarantee twenty (20) dinners to our caterer.  When we do not have 20 persons who eat, the difference must be made up from our administration fund.  This can become costly to the club, so we request that you please attend the meetings and purchase a dinner.

The question was raised about whether we should continue with dinners or take some action to ensure the costs are covered.

At least some of us consider the dinners to be an important part of the club, especially from a socialization aspect – there is nothing like breaking bread together.  Also a number of the spouses are very happy to have a break from their regular routine every Tuesday when they don’t have to prepare dinner at home.  What do you each have to say?

Future Happenings:  Thanks to those who provide me with their schedules.
